Abstract
This study aimed to understand the students’ perceptions regarding the language used as the medium of instruction in selected subjects under the New General Education Curriculum (NGEC) at the tertiary level. The study seeks to provide a basis for developing a language planning strategy using Filipino as the medium of instruction. A qualitative research approach with a basic research design was utilized. The respondents were selected first-year students from the College of Teacher Education taking NGEC subjects at Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College. A semi-structured in-depth interview was conducted to gather the students’ perceptions of the language used as the medium of instruction in selected NGEC subjects. Based on the analysis, the students’ perceptions revealed that they found it difficult to understand terminologies, had difficulty in expressing themselves, felt freer in articulating their thoughts, and found learning easier and more engaging when Filipino was used as the medium of instruction. From the data presented and interpreted, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. Students prefer the use of Filipino as the medium of instruction in selected NGEC subjects; and 2. Language planning that promotes the use of Filipino is an effective way to demonstrate that the Filipino language is not limited in scope and can be used across various disciplines. From the results of the study, the following recommendations were formulated: 1. Use Filipino as the language of instruction in selected NGEC subjects; and 2. Provide opportunities to implement a Filipino language plan in accordance with existing laws and memoranda; 3. It is strongly recommended that workshops and training programs be organized for teachers handling selected NGEC subjects, focusing on the effective use of Filipino, to ensure its more meaningful and impactful integration in classroom instruction.
