Abstract

This study aimed to identify the challenges encountered by tertiary students in gathering research data in Filipino and to determine the strategies they used to address these difficulties. A qualitative descriptive research design was employed. Data were collected through interviews with 30 students of Bachelor of Arts in Filipino Language from Benguet State University and were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and insights.The findings revealed that students face multiple challenges in data gathering, including difficulty in obtaining responses from participants, limited access to research materials, insufficient knowledge of the research topic, distance to data collection sites, and issues in group cooperation. Personal barriers such as shyness and fear in approaching respondents also hinder effective data collection. Additionally, participants’ limited familiarity with modern technological tools further constrained the process. To address these challenges, students employed various strategies such as careful selection of participants, thorough planning, use of multiple data-gathering methods, and allocation of sufficient time. These strategies contributed to improving the efficiency and reliability of the data collection process. The study concludes that both internal and external factors significantly influence the success of research data gathering. It emphasizes the need for strategic planning, flexibility in methods, and strong collaboration among student researchers. The findings may serve as a basis for developing targeted research training programs and practical guidelines to enhance students’ competencies in conducting research, particularly in the field of Filipino.
