Abstract

Problems of interpretation usually occur in written and oral discourses. This is attributed to the fact that language is susceptible to different interpretations. And when this problem arises, man is laid astray from the acquisition of reality. It was theorized that for over the centuries, man the rational being accepts truth as static and universal. Prior to this, Nietzsche revolutionized the term when he pointed out that truth is a metaphor thus, the same is changeable and dynamically evolving.Philosophies sprung forth regarding how the mind learns and the learning process, the end of which is the acquisition of reality. Banking from Heidegger's ontological hermeneutics, Hans-Georg Gadamer developed philosophical hermeneutics where arguing that the “Being that can be understood is language”, and that all understanding is interpretation, and all aspects of interpretation takes place in the medium of language. Hence, hermeneutics is viewed as not a method of determining truth, rather a practice of reading text while trying to understand the conditions which make truth possible. This research project is built on the thesis that philosophical hermeneutics is a necessary condition in the acquisition of reality. Thus, this paper reviews critically the foundations and the fundamental nature of hermeneutics. It discusses Philosophical hermeneutics with reference to its role in the acquisition of reality. It explored Gadamer’s Fusion of Horizon together with Truth and Method. Finally, this study explicates its implication to language education.
