Abstract

This study examines criminology graduates' academic performance and licensure examination results from North Luzon Philippines State College (NLPSC), now the Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC), from 2014 to 2016. Utilizing an ex post facto and correlational research design, the study analyzes the relationship between academic performance in board subjects and the Licensure Examination for Criminologists (LEC). Descriptive and inferential statistical methods, including ANOVA and Pearson’s correlation, were employed using SPSS. Findings indicate that while graduates performed at an average level academically (M=81.39), their board examination performance was consistently below the passing mark (M=73.42). Criminal Jurisprudence emerged as the most challenging subject academically and in the board examination performance. Correlation analysis revealed a moderate yet significant relationship (r=0.598, p<0.01) between academic performance and LEC results, which suggests that undergraduate preparation influences board examination outcomes. However, there is no significant improvement in board performance observed over the years. The study recommends that additional emphasis be given to the subject Criminal Jurisprudence, and supplementary materials should be introduced to improve students' understanding and mastery of the subject content. A year-level examination covering board subjects completed by the students will be implemented or administered to reinforce their learning and improve information retention on their completed criminology board subjects. Faculty members may consider incorporating more interactive teaching techniques, including practical exercises, into their subjects. To enhance student engagement and improve the retention of complex concepts, particularly in subjects like Criminal Jurisprudence. Further studies should be conducted to investigate other predictors of board examination performance.
