Abstract

In rural Ilokano communities, child labor—defined as work that harms a child’s development and interferes with their education—remains a hidden reality. This study explores the lived experiences of children trapped in labor, revealing the depth of their silent struggles. A review of existing literature on child labor highlights the need for further research into the lived experiences of its victims. In response, this qualitative case study focused on the Ilokano context, examining the personal stories, challenges, and perspectives of children engaged in labor. Using both cool and warm analysis of interviews with 7 child laborers, the study identified three key findings. First, the narratives of child labor victims are tagged as SARITA: Sunrise Struggles, Aspiration over Obligation, Resilient Integration, and Toward Aspiration. Second, their challenges are termed RIGAT: Rejected Reality, Inescapable Fatigue, Grave Gauntlet, and Academic Trade. Meanwhile, the life views of child labor victims are dubbed as ADALL: Activate Time Management, Devise Practical Life Strategy, Anchor Life to God and Trust in Self, Learning to Rise, Saving to Succeed, and Live with the Reality. Finally, this study concludes how child labor impacts Ilokano children emotionally, academically, and vocationally, limiting their future potential. Also, the life views of the victims highlight the profound effects of these struggles on their development and life prospects.
