Abstract

This study aims to determine the difficulties experienced by learners whose first language is English in learning the Filipino subject, the challenges experienced by teachers in teaching and interventions of the challenges experienced by learners whose first language is English. This research is qualitative research with a descriptive design. Data was collected through interviews with eight (8) teachers who teach learners whose first language is English. The study revealed that learners whose first language is English have difficulty learning the Filipino subject. This includes spelling, understanding the medium of instruction used by the teacher, engaging in class interaction, comprehension and pronunciation. It also emerged that teaching the Filipino subject to students whose first language is English is challenging. Lack of knowledge in translation, understanding instructions, arousing students' attention and interest are some of the challenges experienced by teachers. The intervention that can address the difficulties of students whose first language is English is cartoon and animated videos using the Filipino language. It is recommended that in teaching, teachers continue to observe the difficulties experienced by learners and apply necessary methods to help the learners. Teachers may use the intervention produce in this study as a response to the difficulties experienced by learners whose first language is English.
