Abstract

This study explores the perceptions and expectations of first-year English major students regarding the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in English language learning, aiming to develop a primer on ICT-based instruction. Employing a descriptive research design, data were collected from 40 students at Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College using a survey questionnaire adapted from Benini (2014). The survey assessed students' insights on ICT's advantages, effectiveness, and their expectations for ICT integration in language learning. The findings revealed that a majority of students perceived ICT as highly beneficial and effective in enhancing their English proficiency, with most expecting significant improvements through its use. Students expressed strong positive attitudes towards digital tools such as educational websites, content creation applications, and immersive technologies like VR and AR. The study concludes that ICT plays a vital role in engaging learners and supporting personalized, interactive learning experiences. Based on these insights, several salient recommendations are proposed: educators should actively involve students in selecting ICT tools, provide comprehensive guidance on their usage, and foster digital literacy skills. Additionally, continuous professional development for teachers and ongoing evaluation of ICT implementations are essential to maximize benefits. The implications underscore the importance of aligning ICT integration with learners' perceptions and needs, ultimately enhancing the effectiveness of English language instruction through technology.
