Factors Affecting the Listening Skills of Bachelor of Elementary Education Students

Abstract

Listening skills refer to the abilities of the learners in perceiving knowledge through the sense of hearing. This study aimed to determine the factors that affect the listening skills among college students of the University of Southern Mindanao. Specifically, this study sought to: (1) determine the factors affecting the listening skills of the respondents in terms of (a) personal, (b) emotional, (c) linguistic, and (d) speaker; (2) determine the levels of perceived listening skills of the respondents; and (3) determine the relationship between factors affecting listening skills and levels of perceived listening skills of the respondents. The study utilized a descriptive-correlation research method. Complete enumeration was utilized to get the number of respondents. There were one hundred fifty-two (152) students who participated in the study. The data were collected using adopted and modified questionnaires. The data were presented and summarized descriptively using mean and correlation. The overall result demonstrated that students’ personal, emotional, linguistic, and speaker factors were the affecting procurators of listening skills. The students showcased a skilled level of perceived listening skills. In conclusion, personal and linguistic factors had no relationship between levels of perceived listening skills, while emotional and speaker factors had a significant relationship between levels of perceived listening skills.
