Abstract
This study assesses the students’ awareness and satisfaction with solid waste management (SWM) at Tan Trao University, Vietnam in the context of the global trend towards a “zero carbon campus”. The results showes that students’ awareness of solid waste management in the university ranged from moderate to high, but there were inconsistencies in actual waste sorting practices, especially among students who were less involved in extracurricular activities. Although satisfaction with SWM infrastructure and processes ranged from 3.65 to 3.70 on a Likert scale, indicating a high level, these ratings also highlights the need for clearer guidelines, better labeled waste collection points, and better coordination among relevant university departments. The findings also show that students who participate in campus clubs are more likely to adhere to proper waste segregation than their non-participating peers, highlighting the importance of community-driven initiatives. Implementing comprehensive solutions such as promoting communication, improving waste classification infrastructure, enhancing the role of environmental clubs, and enhancing coordination between units will contribute to the formation of a "green" and sustainable learning and living environment. This is also the foundation for universities to improve the effectiveness of solid waste management, moving towards the goal of sustainable development, while creating a positive ripple effect on the surrounding community.
